When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the LORD said, ‘My Spirit will not contend with humans for ever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.’
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days – and also afterwards – when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the LORD said, ‘I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created – and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground – for I regret that I have made them.’ But Noah found favour in the eyes of the LORD.

The article above reminded me of the reason why God regretted His whole creation and said ‘I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created’ in Noah’s days. Why did God send the universal flood to perish the whole world apart from eight people alone? Also, what did Christ mean when He warned:
As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man? (Matt.24:37)
When His disciples asked Christ on the Mount of Olives: ‘what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?’, He first warned them: ‘Watch out that no one deceives you’ and started answering their questions. In the end, He referred to such a significant warning above. The keys of His suggestion appear to lie in the meaning of the term, ‘Nephilim’ in the passage quoted from Genesis in the beginning.
The ‘sons of God’ בְנֵי-הָאֱלֹהִים, i.e., angels who left their own habitation and who took ‘the daughters of humans’ as their wives bore children to them. These creatures that emerged from interbreeding of the fallen angels with human daughters are the ‘Nephilim’ נְפִלִים, i.e., “the fallen ones”. In verse 9: ‘Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time’ (Line added), the term ‘תָמִים’ means perfect without blemish, which means Noah was genetically unimpaired. So, the DNA of Noah and his family members alone was preserved as God had intended for the human race.
God regretted the contamination of the human DNA with that of His sinful angels. So, God destroyed the entire world by flood. However, as verse 4 makes it clear, post-flood, the Nephilim continued to exist: the Israelites encountered giants Rephaim, Emim, Horim, Zamsummim, Arba, Anak and Anakiem in the land of Canaan.
